ACREE PROJECT LINEAGES

Thirty participants in the Acree Surname DNA Project, identified alphanumerically, have been tested. Their genetic profiles may be viewed by participants at the DNA Ancestry website. Their paternal lines, excluding persons born after 1900, are shown below.

Twenty-three of our participants, who descend from John Acree, Sr. of North Carolina, Abraham Acree of Virginia, or William Acree of Georgia, all have matching Y-DNA test results - exhibiting exact matches or genetic distances of 1-3 (no more than three differences) within 46 markers.

Two of our participants, who descend from William Acree of Wayne Co., Kentucky, have matching Y-DNA results.

The remaining five participants have different test results.

* Note: The lineage of Akrie017 is indefinite, lacking documentation beyond William B. Acree. Based on comparative Y-DNA profiles ("haplotypes") within the project, which exhibit slight but distinctive mutational differences, it is evident that William B. descended from John Acree, Sr. through Edward. Geographical circumstances indicate that he descended from Edward through John R. and Joel Brown Acree.

* Note: The lineage of Acree018 lacks confirmation beyond the Ambrose who was born in 1788.

* Note: Elbert was adopted in eastern Tennessee by John Williamson, who also brought a Cherokee Indian girl into his family. In their DNA tests, two of Elbert's descendants (Williamson019 and Williamson024) matched the ancestral haplotype of Abraham and his brothers. Based upon geographical circumstances and census records, it has been determined that Elbert was most likely fathered by Abraham's grandson John.

* Note: Robert's parents are indefinite. He was orphaned as a young boy in the aftermath of the Civil War and appears to have been raised within his sister's family, who moved from Alabama to Texas in the 1870s. Their father was almost certainly John E. Acree, of established lineage, who died in the late 1860s.

* Note: Henry ran away from home as a teenager. His lineage is undetermined, but he probably descends from William.

* Note: Jasper Newton Acree (1839-1911), of Metcalfe Co., Kentucky, an ancestor of many Acrees in the U.S., was an orphan whose father is unknown. Circumstantial evidence indicates that his mother was Rhoda Wigginton, who married Lewis Acree in Rhea Co., Tennessee, in 1825 and had children with him. Lewis was probably a descendent of Abraham Acree of Caroline Co., Virginia, (above) through Abraham's son James, who migrated to that area of Tennessee. Lewis died before the 1840 census and Rhoda died afterward, leaving her young children to be raised by foster families. In his Civil War pension application and a published newspaper article describing wartime recollections, Jasper related that his father died before he was born, that his mother died when he was four years old, and that his half-brother was killed during the war. The Y-DNA profile of the above Jasper descendent matches a haplotype shared by men having Lawson and Jenkins surnames, with ancestors in southeastern Tennessee. According to the census, there were several men with those surnames living in the Rhea/Meigs/Bledsoe/Hamilton/Bradley Co. area, where Jasper spent his youth in the 1840s. It's likely that his father was one of them.

* Note: Rebecca's husband, Wooten O'Neal Acree, died in 1864 of illness while serving in the Confederate Army during the Civil War. (He descended from William Acree of Wilkes Co., Georgia.) Widowed Rebecca is not known to have remarried, but she gave birth to two additional children in the late 1860s, including Charles. An additional Y-DNA test of Acree005 (raising tested markers to 46) revealed a close match with a man whose patrilineal ancestor was William Reader, Rebecca's married neighbor in 1866, who died later that year. It is a reasonable deduction that one of his two mature sons - Nathan or Allen, who were living nearby, fathered Charles and his sister.
