ETHNIC ORIGINS OF OUR GRANDPARENTS
All of the 282 fully identified immigrants in our family tree came from western Europe. All but seven of them arrived during the colonial period (17th and 18th centuries), when nearly a million people journeyed to America on a voyage that took about ten weeks at sea but was far safer than we imagine. Like most early arrivals, ours were generally poor young men who left a crowded Europe seeking economic betterment. Some fled religious persecution, political upheaval or European war. Others were bound initially as indentured servants. Most married here, but quite a few, particularly the Dutch, brought wives and/or children with them.
In general, the eight branches of our family tree have the following ethnic origins:
Acree branch - EnglishThe 114 emigrants from the British Isles (England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales) all arrived during the colonial period. Most came in the early 17th century; only eight arrived during the 18th. The majority landed in the Chesapeake Bay area of Virginia/Maryland, but a few came to New England. Some settled in historic sites such as Plymouth, Jamestown and Kent Island, while others, destined to marry into Dutch families, chose New York City.
All but one of the 95 Dutch emigrants arrived in the 17th century, when nearly all of the Dutch immigration to America occurred. No more than 6,000 Dutch came to America during the half-century existence of "New Netherland," between 1614, when they erected their first fort, and 1664, when the British took over and re-named the colony New York. A few came by way of an aborted Dutch colony in northeast Brazil and a colony in Indonesia (then called "Batavia"). They settled in New York City itself or up the Hudson River. After the British takeover, their descendents moved to Dutch-populated counties of New Jersey.
All but one of the 44 Germans came at three distinct times, fitting the general pattern of German immigration to America. Seventeen arrived In New York during the mid-17th century under Dutch auspices and inter-married with the Dutch there (as did the early Belgians, Danes, Norwegians and Swedes). Seventeen came in the early-to-mid-18th century from the Rhenish Palatinate area, sailing from Rotterdam and settling initially in Pennsylvania, which became a German haven. Five came during the turbulent year of 1864, in the midst of our Civil War and the formation of Germany as a nation under Prussian rule, when nearly a third of the immigrants to America were Germans. At that time, the Sachse family came from the Duchy of Anhalt-Dessau (near Berlin), sailing from Hamburg, while its associated Ahrenholz family came from the Duchy of Brunswick (70 miles west), sailing from Bremen; both families proceeded directly to St. Louis.
Grandmother Nelson's father and paternal grandparents arrived also in the mid-19th century from Sweden, within a large influx of Scandinavians headed for ethnic communities in the Midwest. Her mother's German parents came at that time to Louisiana and later travelled up the Mississippi River to a German enclave in Iowa.
The 15 French emigrants were mostly Huguenots (French Protestant religious refugees) who arrived in the late 17th century fleeing persecution. As France did not encourage settlers in their sparsely populated territory in the New World, most of our French made their way to New Netherland and assimilated with the Dutch.
