RESIDENCE IN OTHER MIDWEST STATES IN THE 19TH AND 20TH CENTURIES

MAP

Late descendents in our family tree eventually crossed the Mississippi River, except for those in the TenEyck/Williamson branches, who remained in New Jersey. Our Hoover/Ogden and Skipworth/Nelson branch grandparents, however, crossed back east in mid-career - to Illinois, leaving only our Acree/Sachse branch grandparents (just) west of the Mississippi. The map below shows where our grandparents and earlier ancestors lived in these midwestern states. They typically moved several times before settling in a final location. See also the larger map that depicts our grandparents' residences with less detail.

ACREE/SACHSE BRANCHES: After living c1897-1901 as a married adult in Cairo, Illinois, and c1902-c1909 in Paducah, Kentucky, grandfather James W. Acree buried his first wife and moved c1910 to St. Louis, Missouri, where he married grandmother Minnie Sachse, whose father and both sets of grandparents had immigrated to that city from Germany in 1864. James and Minnie moved permanently to McAlester, Oklahoma, in 1916.

HOOVER/OGDEN BRANCHES: Grandfather Guy Hoover married grandmother Jennie Ogden in Indiana in 1906. She had been born in Rush Co., Kansas, where her parents, paternal grandparents and great-grandmother all came to homestead in the 1880s. Guy taught in Tucson, Arizona, (1906-8) and afterward studied for a year in Berlin, Germany, while Jennie stayed home to care for their infant daughter (1908-9). They then lived in Pittsburg, Kansas, (1909-14) before settling permanently in Chicago, Illinois, in 1914.

SKIPWORTH/NELSON BRANCHES: Grandfather Vonce Skipworth was born at Point Pleasant, Missouri, where his parents and paternal grandparents had migrated from Kentucky in the 1870s. His father, Samuel Skipworth, had there married Margaret Wolfe, whose parents had come to nearby Gayosa Twp. about 1867 from Indiana after living twelve years in Illinois. The Skipworth and Wolfe families migrated together to Blue Mound, Kansas, where the Wolfes finally stayed. Samuel and Margaret moved on to Kansas City, McAlester and finally to Denison, Texas, and Sulphur, Oklahoma. Vonce married grandmother Stella Nelson in Kansas City in 1895. They lived there awhile with her parents, who had moved there from Davenport. Stella's father had immigrated to Iowa from Sweden. Her mother had been born in Louisiana to parents who had immigrated from Germany and come up the Mississippi River. Vonce and Stella soon moved to Chicago, where they lived several years until his career took them (east of this map) to Detroit, New York City, and finally to Springfield, Ohio, in 1938.
