Generally speaking, ancestors who lived during the past two centuries (19th and 20th) are 'known'. Their place in our tree is documented by primary source materials (or transcriptions) that have included immediate-family records, family bibles, birth/marriage/death records, cemetery inscriptions, immigration records, census records, military records, church records, wills, organizational records, and federal/state/local government records. See the Primary Sources chart below.
Ancestors who lived earlier must, in most cases, be considered 'reputed'. Their biographic data has been derived mainly from the work of others - recorded in secondary sources that have included books, periodicals, manuscripts, microfilm, LDS records, commercial CD's, websites, and much-appreciated correspondence through the years. See the Bibliographic Sources and Correspondence listings below.
Conflicting accounts have been resolved through careful consideration and selective acceptance. Each ancestor has been regarded individually and assigned at least an estimated year of birth. No ancestor has been simplistically 'downloaded' from a secondary source. Researchers must make their own judgments on the basis of materials they find convincing.
Descent from ancestors in the first four generations of our tree, who lived during the 19th and 20th centuries, are listed below in ascending generational order. Primary sources are abbreviated. (The abbreviaton key follows the eight branch listings.) Gratifyingly, the ancestral relationship of every one of these listed ancestors is supported by genetic evidence.

Bibliographic sources are far too numerous to list completely. The following publications have been particularly helpful. Over two-thirds of the family-group pages are linked to them. While the data attributed to each ancestor is usually supported by multiple sources, a family-group page is linked only to the one considered most informative, which will appear at the top of the screen.

During the past four decades of genealogical research, we have been fortunate to receive considerable assistance from scores of correspondents, many of them distant cousins, who have generously shared their knowledge and findings. They have provided much-appreciated family charts, documents, photographs and other copied materials, as well as useful details, family lore, leads and suggestions. In return, we have attempted to be helpful to them and to others seeking our assistance. Aside from the invaluable contributions of our parents, uncles, aunts and first cousins, those to whom we are particularly grateful have been:
